This wood comes from the rubber tree (Pará rubber tree or Hevea brasiliensis). The rubber tree exudes a latex sap, the world's primary source of natural rubber.

A TREE FOR THE FUTURE.
Rubberwood is an environmentally friendly timber as it makes use of trees that have been cut down at the end of their latex producing cycle. Unlike other woods that are cut down for the sole purpose of producing furniture, rubberwood is only used after the tree completes its latex producing cycle. After 30 years, a rubber tree will start to produce much less latex, making it no longer commercially sustainable.
WHY IS RUBBERWOOD CONSIDERED ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND?

Native to Brazil, rubber trees were brought to Asia at the turn of the century because of the great demand for the rubber that they produced. Now they also grow on plantations in Southeast Asia. The wood used to be burned, until people realized these wonderful trees had one more gift to give: that of their beautiful hardwood.

Rubberwood is used in high-end furniture; it is valued for its dense grain, attractive color, minimal shrinkage and acceptance of different finishes. Rubberwood is strong, flexible, and resistant to fungus, bacteria and mold. It’s compatible with most industrial adhesives, easy to work with and has a beautiful grain suitable for classic quality furniture.
